Wounded Canadian Soldiers / Causumerism

The cover article of the March 26, 2007 issue of Maclean's is about wounded Canadian soldiers returning from Afghanistan and their challenge in readapting to life in Canada with disabilities. Feel free to comment on any aspect of this article you find interesting or thought-provoking.

The article on page 40, The Trouble with Buying for a Cause, discusses the issue of "causumers" that is, people who buy a particular brand because a certain amount of the profits will go to Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. You can find out more about Product Red (discussed in the article) here. On the other hand, websites such as buylesscrap.org argue that shopping is not a solution. Read the article, look at the websites, think about the implications and then share your thoughts on "causumerism".

Hi!, our names are Renson Vega and Jesús Ortega. We are students from the English teaching program at UIS (Industrial University of Santader). We have read the article of the wounded soldiers, and we think that it’s good way for the people to notice that we have to lose too much to win a war, even a part of our body.

We think that it’s very interesting and it’s the real face of the war in the mid east.

As all the wars that we’ve seen, nobody is safe there, and you are always under risk. Maybe this story about the wounded soldiers can make us think about the fact that the war isn’t the only solution for our conflicts, and maybe the politicians have to think better before starting a war. We say this because we are at the border of a war whit Ecuador, and the president of that country made some comments about the war. So we think that this article is a good example of the destruction and the damage that a war can do.

We both think that the war isn’t the solution for the problems of mankind; we think that is better the diplomatic ways. Peace could arrive to our lives and society, only when we leave the weapons and change them for tolerance and mutually binding wishes the war stories of the soldiers are sad and the real reflect of a decadent world!!!.
